Jesmonite Care

Thank you for choosing a handmade Jemonite piece. Each item is carefully crafted and designed to last—but like any artisan material, a little care will keep it looking its best for years to come. Please read this guide carefully, to ensure longevity of your pieces.

What is Jesmonite?

Jesmonite is a durable, lightweight, eco-friendly composite material invented and produced in the United Kingdom since 1984, with a beautiful stone-like finish. It's a firm favourite of many artisan makers and is also a popular material in constructions and industires like film and tv. It’s strong and long-lasting, but still benefits from gentle handling and care.

Handmade Character

Each Jesmonite piece is handcrafted, which means:

  • Small air bubbles, dents or slight colour variations may occur especially on textured / marbled pieces
  • These are part of the unique character of your item—not defects and add unique stone authenticity to the piece

Everyday Cleaning

  • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust or marks [kairehome.com]
  • Dry immediately with a clean, soft cloth
  • For light cleaning, mild soap can be used if needed [liljelunden.dk]

    Avoid:
  • Abrasive sponges or rough cloths
  • Harsh chemicals, bleach, or strong detergents
  • Water submersion for prolonged periods of time

Water & Moisture

  • Jesmonite is not fully waterproof
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water or damp environments
  • Wipe up spills (especially coffee, wine or oils) as soon as possible to prevent staining

Heat & Sunlight

  • Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to prevent fading
  • Avoid placing near radiators, fires, or heat sources

Handling & Use

  • Although durable, Jemonite can chip or crack if dropped
  • Always place on stable surfaces
  • Use protective pads underneath items like trays or coasters to protect furniture

Food Safety

  • Jesmonite is not food safe for direct contact
  • It can be used for wrapped or packaged food, such as:

    - Wrapped sweets
    - Chocolates
    - Packaged snacks

Important Usage Notes

  • Do not place in the dishwasher or microwave
  • Designed primarily for indoor use
  • Not suitable for heavy water exposure unless sealed
  • Sealed vessel can be safely used as candles - ensure you follow the candle care instructions
  • Some types of Jesmonite, when sealed are fully waterproof and weatherproof - we will advise on this in the listing

Sealing & Protection

Our pieces are sealed for added protection. We use food grade natural wax or an acrylic sealers to:

  • Help resist water and stains
  • Make items easier to clean
  • Extend the life of functional pieces like trays or coasters

NOTE: Pieces sealed with the natural wax will need re-coating after approx 6 months and you can do that at home by gently cleaning the piece first, ensuring its dry and then using any natural wax or mineral wax to cover the surface. Allow it to soak in for about 10-15 monutes and buff with microfibre cloth.

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Keep it dry – wipe clean and avoid standing water
  • Clean gently with a soft cloth only
  • Wipe up spills quickly to prevent stains
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
  • Handle with care to avoid chips or cracks
  • Use for display or wrapped treats only (not direct food contact)
  • Add pads underneath to protect surfaces
